The United States Constitution is in harmony with God’s command to decentralize government power. Over the centuries, America has endured trials and tribulations, has undergone many small course adjustments, and made great progress in thousands of ways, but progress has turned into regression (back-sliding) as Americans have discarded many of the principles of Liberty and adopted the deceitful promises of Socialism and Communism. Today, Liberty is wounded and bleeding on the battlefield, but she maintains hope that the patriots of today will come to her rescue. She waits and hopes for rescue by “the active, the vigilant and the brave,” as the great Statesman, Patrick Henry, put it.
One of the most fundamental principles of Liberty that many of our fellow citizens and elected representatives have jettisoned is “Decentralized Power,” both inside the federal government itself, and throughout the entire republic. Under the U.S. Constitution, each State is a sovereign, independent government with far superior powers to that of the federal government. Thus, the Constitution creates a governmental framework where each State government is a check and balance on the federal government. Hard to believe, given the many usurpations of power made by the federal government over the last 100 years? Consider a couple proofs among many.
In Federalist 45, James Madison, called the Father of the Constitution, explains the principles of State sovereignty and the fact that each State constitutes a check on federal power: “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. [Federal power] will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and [tariffs on foreign commerce] … The powers reserved to the several states will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.” Considering that America is now composed of fifty sovereign States, the principle of Decentralized Power, and the Liberty it can produce, is clearly established by the U.S. Constitution– if only we would follow it!
Look at the Constitution itself in the first sentence following the Preamble: “All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States…” Note the words, “herein granted.” Those words mean that Congress is forbidden to make laws that involve powers that are NOT “herein granted” no matter how much good a law might presumably do. Why? Because legislating in forbidden areas sets the stage for more forbidden legislation, and more, and more until the federal government completely destroys all checks, balances, and separations of power, resulting in a gigantic despotism over us all. Discarding the principle of Decentralized Power will lead to unbridled tyranny. America is already far down the road to tyranny, but it’s not too late to turn back.
